My good friend Steve Clegg was in the prime of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in latter half of 2010. I'd always known Steve as a man brimming with an irrepressible life force - overflowing with energy, optimism, and enthusiasm for everything he did.
Steve was a phenomenal musician; a highly gifted guitarist with a deeply natural feel for the instrument who imbued his playing with subtle nuances that carried a depth of feeling unsurpassed by any other of my favourite guitarists.
Not long before he died Steve sent me a text message. Written from his hospital bed, and in his characteristically conversational and enthusiastic style, it read as follows:
Starting with the top lightest E string tuned down to E flat c what u can do with this fab tuning that I got from a cool dude Chillian guitarist cleaner in here... E flat. B. F sharp. B. G sharp. E
Steve's altered guitar tunings provided the seed from which 'As the Light Fades : Eulogy' grew - they defined the harmonic landscape.
It's a deliberately ethereal piece, taking the form of a window of time that fades in and out giving a glimpse of a shining light and soul bursting with courage.
