Rise of the Guardians

Over the past year or two I've been recording dialogue for Jude Law's character 'Pitch' and Isla Fisher's character 'Tooth' for Dreamworks' Rise of the Guardians.

It's been great fun, and wonderful to work with Jude, Isla, Peter Ramsey (Director), Christina Steinberg (Producer) and Alex Loots (Production Supervisor). Their positive energy, present in every session, has made the whole process an absolute delight.

I'm really looking forward to the UK release at the end of this month. Here's Jude talking about his character 'Pitch':

On the Eve of the Great Battle

Since late last year I've been working on a very exciting project. I'm sound designing, and contributing snippets of composition to an album which, with over 60 tracks, is calling for a detailed and imaginative approach to track-laying that's challenging in its size and complexity, and hugely satisfying to work on.

It's a concept album. Story-telling songs, intertwined with spoken narration, carry an epic story of love, good against evil, and a band of close friends on a life-changing journey.

The talented musician and writer behind its creation, and who's enthusiasm knows no bounds, is over-flowing with positive energy and infectious good vibes, encouraging me to keep going on this monster of an album!

'On the Eve of the Great Battle' speaks of the tension and nervous anticipation felt by our heroic companions as they prepare to face their nemesis.

I've written the piece making use of a combination of synths, pre-existing sound effects & music samples, and sounds recorded on my iPhone.

As the Light Fades : Eulogy

My good friend Steve Clegg was in the prime of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in latter half of 2010. I'd always known Steve as a man brimming with an irrepressible life force - overflowing with energy, optimism, and enthusiasm for everything he did.

Steve was a phenomenal musician; a highly gifted guitarist with a deeply natural feel for the instrument who imbued his playing with subtle nuances that carried a depth of feeling unsurpassed by any other of my favourite guitarists.

Not long before he died Steve sent me a text message. Written from his hospital bed, and in his characteristically conversational and enthusiastic style, it read as follows:

Starting with the top lightest E string tuned down to E flat c what u can do with this fab tuning that I got from a cool dude Chillian guitarist cleaner in here... E flat. B. F sharp. B. G sharp. E

Steve's altered guitar tunings provided the seed from which 'As the Light Fades : Eulogy' grew - they defined the harmonic landscape.

It's a deliberately ethereal piece, taking the form of a window of time that fades in and out giving a glimpse of a shining light and soul bursting with courage.

This Must Be The Place

I came across this series of short films today. Each one is touching, beautifully shot, and carefully crafted.

'Byun' features music from Kate Simko and Julian Lynch; 'Coffer', music from Michael Hurley and Marisa Anderson; and 'Prime', (a gentle and poignant portrait of a Manhattan burger joint), the music of Johnny Tillotson, The Staple Singers, Spiritual Singers, and Mask Man & The Agents.

In 'Prime' in particular, the sound design delicately matches the considered visuals, but throughout the three films an attention to mood-enhancement and intricate sound details is strongly evident.

There's no place like home. It's where we live, work and dream. It's our sanctuary and our refuge. We can love them or hate them. It can be just for the night or for the rest of our lives. But whoever we may be, we all have a place we call home.
THIS MUST BE THE PLACE is a series of short films that explore the idea of home; what makes them, how they represent us, why we need them.
Produced and directed by Ben Wu and David Usui, of Lost & Found Films.
